Signing Off

When I first started blogging, it was before the Asifa. Post-asifa, there arose the question whether I could (and should) continue. Consulting my mentor, we had thought that this may be litoeles, which, if not essential, may have fallen under the exception category (see Bava Kama 83a). He asked for some time to think it over, while in the meantime I continued blogging.

Originally of the mind that this was okay, he has come to the conclusion that a different direction was better, both with regard to me personally as well as to that of my blogging endeavor. Gedolei Yisroel consider bloggers to be cranks and haters and as such should be treated the way such people are treated in normal, civilized, human society: marginalized by being ignored. Responding to haters just legitimizes them and adds fuel to the fire.

I will no longer be blogging, neither here nor anywhere else. Baruch shetzivanu lishmoa divrei chachamim.

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to all those who’ve read and commented on this blog. I would like to single out bloggers who were kind enough to link to this blog and publish my comments on their own blogs, even though I was often severely critical of them: Harry, Dovid, Tzig, Garnel, Eli, Bray and others. Thank you.

  2. Enjoy your free time.

(By the way your little Bracha up there? Maybe a Bracha L’vatala) 🙂

  3. I still say that the Chasam Sofer invented Chareidism but I’ll miss you anyway.
Ands here’s why I didn’t delete your comments and participated so vigorously on your blog: we are one big family. We might disagree, we might argue, but we must speak and shout at one another. otherwise the connection will be lost and something important will be destroyed.
Good mazel in your future endeavours.

That’s ironic. In the Torah and Science post, you challenged people to find sources to support the rationalist approach. When I presented them to you, you responded with a torrent of insults and ad hominems.

  5. I always admire someone who follows his convictions, as difficult as it may seem. You brought some wit, zeal, and passion to the frum blogoshpere. Of course, the asifa for you spelled the end; You either proved to be a hypocrite, or you had to close shop.

I hope you can now spend more time getting closer to Hashem, and realizing the specialness of the full spectrum of Jewish views, and indeed, the full spectrum of Jews.Sure, there are haters out there, but they are not any of the bloggers you mentioned. Those bloggers are just as passionate as you about getting closer to Hashem, and about trying to fix everything that plagues our Jewish communities in this era.

In a few years time, When Agudah and the Moetzes reverse themselves and give their official sanction to blogs(because there will be more Torah,Halachah, Hashkafa, and chizuk on the web than there has ever been in print), won’t you please come back?

  6. Your mentor is a smart and learned man. While bloggers you mentioned are indeed hateful, vile people, the lowest of the low, we must always understand that we cannot judge them. Had we gone through the same brainwashing that they have gone through in their MO communities and schools we may have turned out similar to them. The ill-informed grow to be the ignorant, and as Chazal say, the ignorant are full of hate for the learned. It is only their arrogance that deserves disdain, because instead of recognizing their own lack of knowledge and seeking education, they consider themselves qualified to criticize those far greater than them.

Harry Maryles, whose lack of Torah knowledge is exceeded only by his lack of information about the Hareidi community, is so full of SInas Chinam and Chillul Shem Shomayim and he has been machshil the rabim to a degree that it is hard imagine what’s going on inside him.

I am glad to see you treating him and his ilk the way they should be treated. They are hateful ignorami, who deserve only our derision.

    • The bloggers are “hateful” “vile” “ignorant” “arrogant” and “deserving of derision” …but let’s not judge them.
      Classic.
Almost as artful as HAP’s parting left hook followed by a gentlemanly tip of the hat.
So glad you’re not one of the haters.

      • If you want I can judge him, but I really think someone indoctrinated as he has been is not really capable of being much different. If you disagree, please feel free to judge Harry.

    • i’m not judging you, but you are a first class jerk. I’m not judging at all. Chas v’shalom. I am sure there is a reason for your being a jerk. So to be clear. You are a jerk. But I am not judging you.

      • Glad you’re not judging. You’re nto understanding either. But I didn’t expect you to.

        • You’re accusing MO’s of being brainwashed?
          Pot, meet kettle.
Mayer, good luck to you. You’ll never have the insight to realize that when we on the outside think of Chareidim in negative, stereotypical fashions, it’s because of Chareidim like you, not HaP.

    • i am charedi and you dont speak for me. your comments show that YOU are the one full of sina.

    • I ask the same thing. You didn’t know the Internet is full of shmuts until the asifa?

  7. “Gedolei Yisroel consider bloggers to be cranks and haters and as such should be treated the way such people are treated in normal, civilized, human society: marginalized by being ignored. Responding to haters just legitimizes them and adds fuel to the fire.”

Tell me, is it possible for someone to be critical of Charedim and not be classified as a crank/ hater?

    • From Mayer’s glossary of handy Chareidi terms:
      1) Criticism of MO and Religious Zionists = telling it like it is
      2) Criticism of Chareidim = crank/hater of God, Torah and “the Gedolim”

  8. I guess
כשם שמקבלים שכר על הדרישה כך מקבלים שכר על הפרישה

    The internet will miss you!
